Many of us, at some point or the other, have suffered from dark circles. Now, the question is why dark circles happen? The reasons for your under eyes getting darker than your face include genetic and hereditary tendency to be prone to dark circles, sun exposure, lack of iron (yeah, apparently iron deficiency does that), hyperpigmentation, smoking and the usual suspect – lack of sleep, which also causes puffy eyes.
What you do for getting rid of dark circles will depend on the underlying cause. If it is genetic or hereditary, covering it up works well. If there is a lack of iron in your diet then an iron supplement should cure them in due course. If it is sun exposure then the sunscreen can help.
There are also natural cures that everyone seems to swear by such as potato slices and cool tea bags under the eye. These can all be tried if you have the time available to wait for the results. But they are not an effective method for a rushed up morning.
So I, Tulika your fellow community member did some digging up and reached out to those who have dark circles the tricks that they swear by to get rid of dark circles that you can include in your day/nighttime routine or in makeup routine to beat the dark circles.
6 Tricks The Community Swears By To Get Rid Of Dark Circles
1.Using a full coverage foundation
Your makeup routine can help you beat against dark circles if you start with finding the right base. You should be looking for a full coverage foundation like Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Full Coverage Matte Foundation or the M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15. Both these foundations have excellent reviews from its users on various beauty websites. Globally, the beauty community (including India) swears by these foundations for their ability to cover dark circles and spots almost instantly. In the process, they also even out the skin tone. The community recommends that for seamless application and perfect finish, using these foundations with a Beauty Blender (another cult classic that has inspired so many copycats) or similar sponges.
2.Conceal to reveal bright eyes:
You can always go for a more targeted approach by BFFing the concealer. For the under eyes area, the best way to pick a concealer is to pick a shade or two lighter than your foundation. This will ensure that your eyes look brighter and always lean towards full coverage concealer when aiming for dark circles. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer and Maybelline Age Rewind Instant Dark Circle Cover Concealer are the two concealers that our community swears by. You might ask what are some of the best concealers. Well, Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer is one of them. It has been around for a while and it continues to be part of the “best concealers” list year after year. Another great option which is universally loved is Too Faced Born This Way Super Coverage Multi-Use Sculpting Concealer. Te community also approves of the M.A.C Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer
3.Colour correct it
Colour whaa? Yeah, you read it right, colour correcting. This is a technique used by many makeup artists to neutralize the various skin pigmentation issues such as dark circles, blemishes, sallow skin (basically you look like you have a cold). The underlying idea is to use a colour that cancels out the colour of the blemish. So, for dark circles, peach (for light skin) or orange (for darker skin), can neutralize the colour of dark circles. This is a neat little trick that can really be handy. Most colour palettes come with a helpful guide, telling you what colour on the palette will cancel out which of the skin blemishes. A great option with rave reviews by Indian beauties is NYX Professional Make up Colour Correcting Palette.
Another economical and easy trick that the community suggests is to use a red or an orange lip colour under and around your eyes (this trick was made popular by Deepica Mutyala almost 5 years back). Use a clean brush or your fingers to swipe up some lipstick in red or orange and start spreading around your eyes. Thereafter, wear your foundation on top of it, as usual. This is a good way to not have to go buy a new palette and use almost finished red/orange lipstick.
As the name suggests, the highlighter illuminates a certain area. Usually, this used at high points of the face such as the cheekbones, the tip of the nose, cupids bow but, a great highlighter can also be used to disperse the light around dark circle resulting in illumination of that area.
Dark colours absorb light, light colours scatter light, So, to make dark circles invisible, we just need to make the area scatter the light and it will look brighter. Now, to do this, you will want to avoid overly glittery highlighters and pick a more toned down, glowy finish ones. This will help you create a natural lit-from-within illumination. You could also focus on ones having colour such as a yellow, peach or lavender undertone which will combine the light scattering effect colour correction. One such very well-loved highlighter is the Charlotte Tilbury’s Beauty Light Wand, another favourite that many of your shared is the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter and Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powder, both have received rave reviews by its users.
6. Vitamin C
There is good reason and merit in the community’s obsession with Vitamin C. No really! soon we think we’ll have to have our own Vitamin C club to talk about the most recommended products with Vitamin C in it. Vitamin C is known to brighten skin, improve the overall appearance and overcome dullness. If the reason for your dark circles is hyperpigmentation then an under eye cream with good concentration of Vitamin C can be the exact elixir you need to banish those dark circles. We have covered various vitamins, including Vitamin C in one of our posts. If you’re just beginning using Vitamin C and under-eye creams or serums, the community recommends St.Botanica Vitamin C Brightening Eye Serum which has garnered great reviews by its customers. Plus the price is so affordable, you would love to give it a try.
There you have it, relatively easy and effective ways to target your dark circle problems. Of course, this is by no means exhaustive and we would love to hear about your own tips and tricks that you have mastered for treating dark circles and we’d broadcast it to the global beauty community.
