Lips! They do so much. From the smacking to relish food to the max to the constant biting (because hello anxiety!). From the slow-burning kisses and the ravaging Bridgerton-esque kisses (you know what we mean!). Our lips – they really do go through a lot, so they are ought to suffer the most as well.

From dry lips that flake and make that matte lipstick look like coloured feathers sticking out of your lips or the winter dryness that makes your lips look like a shrivelled raisin. We know taking care of lips is hard and sometimes even the best lip balms don’t give those results. What you need are some instant at-home remedies.

We reached out to the community to share their top home remedies for dry lips and rounded up the best remedies that you can use to treat your dry lips with ingredients easily available at home.

Ghee Lip Balm

Why users love itGhee‘ or clarified butter is one ingredient that came up again and again and YET AGAIN when we asked community members to share what home remedies they use to treat their dry and chapped lips. The reason so many people swear by it is that it instantly locks in moisture, is almost there in every house and is also edible.

How to use it – While ghee gives you that instant relief from dry lips, to properly treat and heal your chapped lips apply warm ghee on your lips 2-3 times a day for at least 15 days. If you can do try and leave it overnight as well, as that’s when your lips are almost untouched and will help the ghee lock in moisture.

Brown Sugar Scrub

Why users love it – A key thing that almost everyone tends to forget is exfoliating their lips. Just how you have to scrub your face to remove dead skin cells for that instant glow and smooth as silk skin feeling, who also have to scrub the top layer of your lips to get rid of dead skin cells that have pilled on overtime to get pillow-soft Lips.

How to use it – A great remedy that many trust is sugar scrub. Now this scrub calls for brown sugar but you can use white sugar as well, but make sure it’s granulated and not powdered. Now take some of that granulated sugar, add a few drops of lemon and honey, and your sugar scrub is ready to take away that old layer of skin on your lips. Damp your lips, take some of the scrub and use your finger or a brush and gently scrub your lips for a minute or two. Wipe it clean with some warm water and tissue. Once you wipe your lips, you will notice that your lips have not only become smooth but also their colour looks more vibrant depending on what your natural lip colour is. You can then go ahead apply your favourite lip balm or ghee. Some community members suggested that they scrub their lips almost every time before applying a matte lipstick for a smooth, non-flaking finish.

Milk Cream or Malai

Why users love it – Vegan and lactose intolerant friends you might have to skip this one but for the rest of us who love dousing our pasta’s in extra shavings of parmesan, think of your lips as the same pasta and douse your lips in milk cream or malai (the thick layer that settles on top when you boil cow’s raw milk). Milk cream contains lactic acid which is the gentlest AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) that is out there. Lactic acid is known to very gently but effectively exfoliate the skin.

How to use it – Users who have tried and tested this remedy for long suggest to apply a thick layer of milk cream over your lips for food 10 – 20 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. You will instantly experience that your lips no longer feel irritated and painful. In fact, if you do this every day, your lips will start looking well moisturized. Also if you feel you want to increase the vibrancy of your lips, you can mix some saffron with the milk cream and then apply it to your lips to make them pinkier.

Honey Mask

Why users love it – They don’t call honey ‘the golden liquid’ for nothing. Honey has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties so apart from hydrating your lips (honey is a natural humectant, so it increases the water content and takes away all the dryness) it also helps curb infections that might occur due to the cuts your lips may experience because you won’t stop biting on them.

How to use it – According to users, there are a lot of ways you can use honey to remedy dry lips. You can either use it alone as a lip mask, mix it in with sugar and lemon to create a lip scrub, and apparently, you can also mix it with vaseline to create a lip balm and apply it overnight as a lip sleeping mask.

Why users love it – One thing that you will find in every household are oils – coconut oil, almond oil and mustard oil are truly lip saviours, share its users. Contrary to popular beliefs oils are occlusive so they don’t moisturize the lips but trap the natural moisture and the moisture from your lips balms that are high in humectants and emollients on your lips, so your skin can stay hydrated and soft throughout the day. They basically repair dry and chapped lips by creating a seal over your lips so moisture can’t escape.

How to use it – The best way to apply oils is to slightly warm then and then apply it on your lips.
