How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated Through the Year?

As seasons change, last seasons trends become passe and new trends become all the rage. From our clothes to our shoes, even the shade of lipsticks (deep shades for fall-winter, and pop colours for spring-summer). One thing however that is never out of season is hydrated and moisturized skin. Can you even imagine someone saying ” hydrated skin is so last season”? No right!

We love a hydrated, moisturized and healthy face but let’s be honest some times it is difficult and rather confusing to have happy hydrated skin throughout the year. Your skin is dynamic and demands different a skincare approach as seasons change.

It’ll take a little more than just using different moisturizers for summer and winter to have well moisturized, hydrated and plump skin through the year.

MAKING YOUR SURE IS ACTUALLY CLEAN & DRINK WATER

No matter what you are using to moisturize your face, it won’t really get absorbed by your skin and will just end up sitting on the top of your face if you face is not actually clean. When pores are clogged and there is dead skin it becomes difficult for any moisturizing or hydrating product to do its job. So it’s important to make sure that your skin is clean before applying any sort of skincare.

  1. Cleanse – When you properly cleanse your face it doesn’t just get rid of the dirt that sits on the top of your skin but also gently cleanses your pores. For the love of double-cleanse, when you do wear makeup before going in with a soap-based cleanser use a makeup removing balm/oil or micellar water to break down the makeup.
  2. Toner– Toners are actually really important before you apply any hydrating moisturizer, serum or mask. They increase the efficacy of your product by preparing your skin by unclogging pores, exfoliating the skin that removes dead skin cells and restoring the pH balance of the skin. If you’re not a fan of chemical or acid toners, try exfoliating your skin with a gentle scrub but do not skip this step.

USING THE RIGHT KIND OF MOISTURIZER FOR THE RIGHT SEASON & DRINKING LOTS OF WATER

Depending on where you live and what seasons you are experiencing your skin’s hydrating needs also change. Try using a water-based moisturizer in summers. Water-based formulas are usually lightweight which makes them apt for summer days and night when you are likely to experience humidity, sweat, dry and hot weather. In winters due to the drop in temperature, cold winds and lack of humidity in the air make the skin prone to dry patches, flakiness, cracking and in some cases stretchy and irritated too. During winters switch to a more rich moisturizer to address these concerns.

USING HYDRATING INGREDIENTS & STILL DRINKING WATER

Nature and science have made a lot of hydrating ingredients available to us in the form of humectants and occlusives. Aloe vera, honey, hyaluronic acid and glycerin are some of the most common humectants i.e they hydrate the skin by drawing water from the lower levels of the skin to the top layer of the skin and increase the level of moisture on the top layer of the skin also called the epidermis and hold it there. Occuslives are ingredients that form a physical barrier on the skin so that the water in your skin can’t escape and keep the skin moisturized. Think oils like argan oil, castor oil, nut oil and butter like shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter and kokum butter.

THINKING BEYOND MOISTURIZERS WHILE DRINKING WATER

When you really feel like pampering your skin and think your skin needs extra TLC, you might want to opt for hydrating serums and masks that have hydrating ingredients in high percentage and infuse your skin with nutrients that instantly hydrate and plump your skin.

LAYERING THE PRODUCTS THE RIGHT WAY & DRINKING WATER

How you layer your skincare products actually makes a difference in how well hydrated your skin is. The layering of skincare products is always up for debate, some say moisturizers should be applied after your serum and before your eye cream, some say it should go after your eye cream and before facial oils if you use any. But the basic thumb rule is thicker your product, later should it be applied as part of your skincare routine. So apply your water-based products first followed by oil-based formulas. Vice-versa won’t work here because if you apply oil-based formulas first, it will create a barrier (oils are occlusives that form a barrier over your skin) and won’t let water your based formulas to be absorbed your skin.

SAY NO TO HOT WATER ON THE SKIN & KEEP DRINKING WATER

While it may feel extremely relaxing, hot water can do more damage than good to your skin. Hot water tends to dry your skin out by stripping it of moisture. Even when it’s freezing outside, instead of using hot water, splash your face with lukewarm water instead.

INVEST IN A HUMIDIFIER & A NICE BOTTLE TO DRINK WATER FROM

This is especially a good idea in the winter, but it can be beneficial all year-round if you live in a dry climate. Low moisture air can cause your skin to feel dry. That’s where a humidifier comes in. It can help to add moisture back into the air and help your skin retain moisture.

HYDRATE ON THE GO & KEEP WATER HANDY AT ALL TIMES

Facial mists are a great way to hydrate your skin on the go and when you feel like your makeup is drying out. They add a boost of hydration that instantly injects life into the skin that might start to look dull during the day.
